A Full-Day Social Media Workshop (Sept. 28)

The Deadline Club will host a full-day workshop with hands-on training in multimedia and social media skills at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in Times Square on Saturday, Sept. 28. Learn from some of the leaders in the online journalism world, including editors from The Associated Press, CNBC.com, the New York Daily News and more.

This workshop is priced at the rock-bottom rates of $45 for Deadline Club members of record—who are current in both their dues to The Club and the Society of Professional Journalists—and $75 for non-members. (Prices will rise at the door.) Participants will enjoy a free lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Neophytes may attend a morning workshop covering the basics included in the price of this workshop, while those with some social media experience may prefer to join us at noon for lunch. But wait, there’s more! Participants will receive a discount coupon for an upcoming CUNY J-camp workshop offering more in-depth training.

Keep up with the fast-moving changes in journalism, including new digital tools and tactics to report, produce and promote your work through social media. This innovative workshop will range from the basics of Twitter and LinkedIn to advanced topics like social analytics and SEO strategies. A multimedia track will include a crash course on producing photos and videos with your smartphone.

Instructors will include Robert Anthony, a Deadline Club Past President and technology writer; Jake Beckman, a Partner Accelerator with RebelMouse; Eric Carvin, the Social Media Editor of The Associated Press; Rebecca Davis, a Digital Producer with NBC News DigitalLauren Johnston, an Editorial Director with the New York Daily News; Scott Mlyn, a Picture Editor at CNBC.com; Anjali Mullany, a News Editor of Fast Company; and Herman Wong, a Social Media Editor at Quartz.

When: Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour for lunch at noon. Introductory session from 10 a.m. to noon is optional for participants.

Twitter 101

It’s not too late to join the Twitter revolution with this basic morning class that will get you up and tweeting in 140-characters or less. You’ll pick a handle, learn to follow other accounts, use hashtags and understand basic analytics.

Instructors: Anjali Mullany, a Deadline Club board member who is a News Editor at Fast Company and formerly a Social Media Editor at the Daily News, and Herman Wong, a Social Media Editor at Quartz.

Pinterest 101

Learn tips on how to effectively use Pinterest and make it a part of your social media strategy from a Deadline Club Past President who has acquired more than 1.3 million followers on this photo-sharing site.

Instructor: Robert Anthony, a Deadline Club Past President who is a technology and consumer electronics journalist and travel writer.

Rules of the Game: Social, SEO and Boosting Your Personal Brand

New tools go live everyday, but it all gets down to boosting content that you want others to see, while tracking the news you need to see. Learn how to interpret social analytic numbers to modify and create content based on reader interaction and interest, while enhancing your online presence.

Instructor: Lauren Johnston, the Digital Editorial Director at the Daily News and an Adjunct Professor at St. Johns University.

 

2:20 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.

How to Report Using Social Media

Get ahead of your beat while reaching sources through Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. Get the latest tips on tracking and connecting with voices you care about through monitoring tools like TweetDeck, and geography-based programs like Geofeedia. Learn the basics of communicating with pros and amateurs in potentially difficult situations, while properly verifying and crediting sourcing.

Instructor: Eric Carvin, a Social Media Editor at The Associated Press.

De-Clutter Your Online Life

Centralize and synchronize your online presence, gathering your streams and broadcasts in one place with RebelMouse, Evernote and Wunderlist, while coordinating with your gmail account for a smooth workflow.

Instructor: Jake Beckman, a Partner Accelerator with RebelMouse, who was formerly with Bloomberg and ABC News.

 

MULTIMEDIA TRACK

 

1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.

Better Smartphone Video

Both artistic output and serious reporting is possible with this increasingly basic newsroom tool. Get going with the fundamentals of video capture, such as lighting, composition, shot selection and audio. In this introductory overview, video editing, additional equipment and recommended apps will also be discussed.

Instructor: Scott Mlyn, a Picture Editor at CNBC.com, who was formerly a Deputy Photo Editor at BusinessWeek magazine. He is a photographer and author, whose film has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art.

Afternoon Break for Multimedia Track

 

2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Smartphone Video How-To

Create a quickie Smartphone video news segment in this hands-on workshop. You’ll shoot and edit using your Smartphone and computer, combining audio and video. This course will involve advance preparation, including downloading and test-reviewing basic apps. The main area of expertise will be iPhone.  This workshop is open to all smartphone users, with an emphasis on iPhone applications. (Students should also sign up for the morning Better Smartphone Video class.)

Instructor: Rebecca Davis, an Emmy-award-winning NBC News digital producer who was formerly at the Daily News.

Pulling it All Together

At the end of the day, you’ll get a chance to ask the instructors questions about all of the skills you’ve learned in one final session.
