NYPD Returns Journalist’s Cameras and Credentials

The Deadline Club is heartened to learn that the NYPD has returned the photo equipment and press credentials of New York Times freelance photographer Robert Stolarik, who was arrested Aug. 4, 2012, while photographing a disturbance in the Bronx.

On Aug. 9, the Club added its voice to those urging the NYPD to return Stolarik’s property and rigorously review the circumstances of his arrest with an eye toward dismissal of all charges. The return of Stolarik’s photo equipment on Aug. 10 and his credentials on Aug. 23 means he can fully return to work. However, the charges against him are still pending.

The Deadline Club has also renewed its request to the NYPD for a meeting with Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly to review measures that Deadline Club officers discussed with him in March to avert confrontations like Stolarik’s, to ensure that officers in the ranks have been properly instructed to respect First Amendment press rights, and to give journalists maximum flexibility in covering the news in public spaces.
