The Deadline Club is pleased to announce that Casey Levinson, journalism teacher and newspaper adviser at Midwood High School in Brooklyn, will be the 15th teacher to receive the Robert Greenman Award for Excellence in High School Journalism Teaching and Advising.
Since 2018, Levinson has been advising the award-winning student newspaper, Argus, which was founded 80 years ago this month. Under his watch, the Argus debuted a revamped print design with color photography, a new website, several new cultural columns, and an Instagram account to maintain community engagement during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He says the student editors’ commitment to strong reporting, news writing and their new digital first approach has inspired him over the past year.
“It has been an honor to steward a program that empowers students to follow their curiosity, hone their writing, and confidently engage with their community and the world,” Levinson said.
Originally from Virginia, Levinson took a bus to New York City after high school and has been in Brooklyn ever since. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hunter College.
