Robert Greenman Award

Named in honor of a journalism educator, author, wordsmith and long-time friend and board member of the Deadline Club, the Robert Greenman Award honors an annual educator for excellence in high school journalism teaching and advising.

Greenman’s importance in journalism education cannot be overstated. He wrote “The Adviser’s Companion,” the seminal guide for high school journalism teachers and played a key role in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. He served as a bridge between journalism professionals and journalism teachers and inspired thousands of student journalist through his engaging, insightful and witty workshops. Greenman launched the Award for High School Journalism Teaching and Advising at the Deadline Club more than 10 years ago.

2023 recipient - Thomas Wentworth

The Deadline Club is pleased to announce that Thomas Wentworth, a journalism teacher and student newspaper adviser at Brooklyn Technical High School, is the 2023 recipient of The Robert Greenman Award for Excellence in High School Journalism Teaching and Advising.

Wentworth advises The Survey, a student paper, which legend has it, began 100 years ago. He has expanded The Survey from a once-a-week after-school club to a 40-minute daily class with 34 spots competitive spots. The course publishes regularly online and three issues a year in print.

Under his leadership the publication has had an impact on the school community, with articles on consequential topics like student mental healthsexual assaultgender neutral locker rooms, affirmative action, and book bans.

The award, along with a video honor, was announced at the Deadline Club’s annual journalism awards dinner at the Harvard Club of New York City on Thursday, May 18. Learn more about Wentworth here.
